December: Christmas magic and polar night

December is the season of kaamos, when the sun barely rises. It is not pitch black: for a few hours, a deep blue and pink twilight lies over the snow. With Christmas lights everywhere and Santa Claus Village in full swing, it is the most atmospheric time — and the busiest and most expensive. Book early. See Santa Claus Village.

January to March: the real Arctic winter

After the holidays, crowds and prices drop and temperatures often fall further — January is usually the coldest month. From February, light returns quickly. Late February to March is a favourite of many Lapland lovers: lots of snow, sunshine, long days for husky and snowmobile safaris and often clear nights for auroras. Watch out for school holiday weeks.

Autumn: ruska and early auroras

From late August, nights grow dark enough for the northern lights, often reflected in still lakes. In September the forests turn red and gold (ruska). No snow activities, but fewer visitors and lower prices.

Summer: the midnight sun

From early June to early July the sun does not set. Santa Claus Village is open, reindeer graze on summer pastures and canoeing and hiking replace sleds. Mosquitoes can be plentiful in July — bring repellent.

Best time to visit, by goal

Your goal Best time Why
Christmas atmosphere late Nov – early Jan lights, events, Santa
Fewer crowds with Christmas spirit late November or mid-January atmosphere without peak prices
Northern lights Sep–Oct, Feb–Mar dark nights, often clear
Huskies & snowmobiles Feb – March deep snow, more daylight
Budget Jan – Mar (outside holidays) cheaper flights and hotels
No cold June – August midnight sun, green nature

What to wear at −20 °C

  • Layering: merino or synthetic base layer, fleece or wool mid-layer, windproof insulated outer layer.
  • No cotton next to the skin — it holds moisture and chills you.
  • Feet: insulated winter boots with room for two pairs of socks (thin + wool).
  • Hands and head: mittens rather than gloves, a hat covering the ears, a neck gaiter or balaclava.
  • Batteries: keep your phone in an inside pocket and bring a power bank.

Most tours lend thermal overalls, boots and mittens. Family tips in our itineraries.
