3 days in Rovaniemi

  1. Day 1: arrive, walk along the river and the Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge, visit Arktikum, sauna in the evening.
  2. Day 2: morning combo tour with huskies, reindeer and Santa Claus Village; northern lights tour at night.
  3. Day 3: snowmobile safari or snowshoeing; departure.

4 days (our favourite)

  1. Day 1: city, Arktikum, sauna and ice swimming.
  2. Day 2: husky safari; free afternoon; northern lights hunt.
  3. Day 3: reindeer farm and Santa Claus Village; dinner in town.
  4. Day 4: snowmobile safari or Ranua Wildlife Park; second aurora evening if needed.

5 days

Add a night in a glass igloo or the snow hotel, a day on Ounasvaara (skiing, snowshoeing) and a slower pace. Five days is the most relaxing option with children.

With children

  • One main activity per day; sledging, snow castles and the hotel sauna fill the gaps.
  • Santa Claus Village in the morning on a weekday; SantaPark on the coldest day.
  • Reindeer rides suit toddlers; longer husky or snowmobile safaris are better from about 6–8 years.
  • Family aurora tours with a campfire are shorter and start earlier.

Package holiday or do it yourself?

Package holiday Do it yourself
Price in peak season often competitive very variable
Flexibility low (fixed dates) high

Our rule of thumb: for the weeks before Christmas and New Year, compare packages — charter flights and bundled hotels are often the most reliable option. From January to March, booking yourself is usually cheaper and more flexible.
