1. City centre — best for most travellers

The compact centre sits on the Kemijoki river. Everything is walkable: restaurants, shops, the Arktikum museum, the Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge, and the stops for city bus 8 to Santa Claus Village. Almost all tour operators pick up at central hotels.

  • Examples: Arctic Light Hotel (design boutique), Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, Scandic Rovaniemi City, Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus, City Hotel, plus many apartments.
  • For whom: first-timers, families, anyone staying 3+ nights.
  • ✔ Pros
  • Walk to restaurants, shops and museums
  • Tour pickups at the door
  • Widest choice and fairer prices
  • ✘ Cons
  • Light pollution: you need a tour for the northern lights
  • Less of the “forest cabin” feeling

2. Arctic Circle & Santa Claus Village

Around the village and the Arctic Circle you will find cabins, glass igloos and resorts in the forest, five minutes from the airport. Examples include the Santa Claus Holiday Village cottages, Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle and Nova Skyland’s glass suites; the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel sits on the slope by SantaPark.

  • ✔ Pros
  • Santa Claus Village on foot, before the tour buses arrive
  • Snowy forest atmosphere, glass roofs
  • Close to the airport
  • ✘ Cons
  • More expensive
  • Few restaurants in the evening
  • Dependent on shuttles or taxis

3. Ounasvaara

The city’s fell, just east of the river: ski slopes, cross-country trails and hotels with views, such as Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara. Darker than the centre, yet ten minutes away.

4. Wilderness lodges and lakeside cabins

Twenty to forty minutes from town, lodges and aurora cabins on lakes offer real darkness, silence and northern lights from the doorstep. Examples include Apukka Resort and the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos at Sinettä. Ideal for couples and aurora hunters; less practical without a car.
